Banality

You know, I quite often sit at a cafe listening to the conversation around me finding it hard to believe that human minds can subsist on a diet of crass stupidity, tabloid spoon fed inane comment and mundane and pointless waffle.

If what spills out of some people’s heads accurately reflects their contents then I am amazed that their own internal monologue does not drive them insane with boredom.

It occurred to me one day that whenever I find myself stunned by another of these forays into mediocrity I should note it down and make a list of these dull conversational dead ends. However even though this list only consists of four quotes I have come to realise that the thing about banality is that it is fundamentally banal it has no peaks or troughs, it is just grinding and unremitting ordinariness.
